A reflection based on the first Mass reading for November 21, 2007 (1 Macc 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63) by Mother Maria- Michael Newe, OSB.
We hear in today’s first reading how “many evils” came upon the Israelites because they didn’t follow the Gentile customs. We experience the same things today in our own lives; and there is an unwillingness in our world to suffer for what is right.
I hear that especially in the business world, it is becoming very difficult to live Christian values. Sunday is becoming less and less of a day of rest. Many businesses call meetings on Sundays, and they expect everyone to attend. I honestly do not know what I would do if I had a family and was in that position. We need to pray for our world to recognize that there is a God, and for those who have to find ways to live their faith and support their families.
