A reflection by Mother Maria Michael Newe OSB on the first Mass reading for January 4 (2 Sm 15:13-14, 30; 16:5-13).
This morning in the first reading, I was "struck", so to speak, by the fact that this is the first time David doesn't respond to an outrage by lopping somebody's head off. He had learned something, and he accepted the correction.
If we could learn to accept a hurt with love! Your willingness to suffer is the measure of your love. We wouldn't be bitter anymore if we could accept suffering as repentance, as a share in Christ's suffering, for after all, it is Christ who suffers in us. I know I need to do penance for my own sins, and also in order that the dignity of the person may be restored to each one.
