Encourage One Another

A reflection by Mother Maria-Michael Newe, OSB.

St. Paul says in one of his letters that we should say the things people really need to hear, those things that will help them. There are times when a good word helps a person to know they’re going in the right direction. And it’s sort of a compass at times. Also a word that says "maybe you can do this differently" is simply a way of saying "let’s turn the compass and get it a little straighter." All things, even criticism, can be a way of getting us in the right direction. Then we don’t take it quite so personally.

Work on a good word. A kind word can be a balm and it can soothe a person’s heart and give them courage for we all need to be encouraged. Simply how we are with one another encourages virtue and the on-going fire of charity. We always have to work in order to keep all headed toward Christ. We have to ever work. That means in good times and in bad; in cold weather and hot weather. Just working to be kind in hot weather is a good deed! So remember the kindnesses we do for one another do encourage one another.
